This unique, real vintage rug from the Taznakht tribe is a tribute to one of the most important events in recent history of Morocco: "Green March" (the color green referring to Islam).
In the struggle between Morocco and Algeria over Spanish Sahara (now Western Sahara), King Hassan II strongly promoted Morocco’s claim to the territory, and in November 1975 he called for a "Green March" of 350,000 unarmed Moroccans into the territory to demonstrate popular support for its annexation.
In this rug you can read the date 1975 and on each sides the words in Arabic: "almassira fatih alsilmi", meaning literally "pacific green march".
Colors of this earth tones rug are an unusual dark sand background, with beige and dark blue designs and inscriptions. Colors were probably alterate with time but I had it professionally recleaned and there is no color bleeding concern to have.
Tight weaving which is typical from the Taznakht tribe. Low to medium pile, silky and soft wool 100%.
Approximate dimensions are 4.6x7.8feet / 140x240cm (no tassels).
The rug has not been cut and comes in its original shape. Both endings have been fixed though.
Again this rug is real vintage, meaning that it has been made first for a private use, not directly for the market. It will come with light signs of age. That said, it shows no stains or obvious fixes and is in a great condition!
Pictures were taken in my bright and all white studio in Marrakech. They have been edited but colors are accurate. Please take time to check all detailed pictures, so you can see the condition and beautiful work on this rug!
