Let me take you behind the scenes and share a little more about myself, the inspiration behind Shkoon, and how this brand was born.
But first of all, what does Shkoon mean?
Shkoon comes from Moroccan Darija, and it literally means "Who?" or "Who’s there?" It’s a question you hear everywhere, all the time: Who’s there? Who made this? Who created this beautiful rug? I also chose this name because of its sound – it has a certain rhythm to it that just felt right for what we’re building here at Shkoon. It’s all about curiosity, discovery, and finding out the story behind every handmade piece.
So who's Shkoon ?
I’m Mario, a French guy who made Morocco home in 2012 – time flies! My adventure started in the heart of Marrakech, running a cozy riad and guesthouse in the beautiful Medina. But it wasn’t long before I got totally hooked on the incredible handmade rugs and decor that fill this country. The craftsmanship, the stories behind each piece – it was impossible not to fall in love.
That’s how Shkoon came to life in 2016 – out of my love for Moroccan art and my desire to share these unique treasures with the world.
Shkoon isn’t just a shop; it’s a collection of items I’ve personally selected to bring you a little bit of Moroccan magic. Every rug, every decorative piece, is something I truly believe in.
What started as an online store has grown into a physical shop in the vibrant Sidi Ghanem district of Marrakech – a creative neighborhood that’s become the hub of design, fashion, art, and inspiration in the city.
I handpick every item, ensuring it’s not only beautiful but also a true representation of Moroccan craftsmanship. My goal is simple: to share my love for handmade Moroccan treasures and bring a piece of this culture into your home.
